….back! Not that I’ve ever left just haven’t posted in some time. Finding the time for this exercise is the problem.
As I mentioned 2-3 posts ago April was a good month. May and June came up just a little short of my expectations. Those shortfalls tend to tug at one’s confidence and optimism. For many the American spirit is indefatigable. The mental composition of a small business owner can easily withstand the many challenges of the current economy. I use the word current because doing business, as we know it, has changed so dramatically. But then again has it????
There are still the wants and needs in the marketplace. Order frequency and size may now be different. Competitors, in terms of the numbers, have increased but what of the quality of the competition? Marketing is still required but with the advent of Web 2.0 tools (aka: social networking) it is becoming more efficient and easily more effective. The idea of “community” becomes much more powerful when conducting business.
There are certain guiding principles in business that one never abandons in order to achieve goals and to maintain the direction of the organization. Things like, Cash is King, Profit Maximization and No Guts, No Glory!!!
It’s much like learning to fly. As a student pilot my flight instructor was keen on two sayings……..first and foremost regardless of ALL else…”fly the plane”….secondly, situation permitting, “what’s happening next?”
In business, as in flying, you should run the business and think about what might be happening next.
Stay on the offensive and celebrate the small victories………
